My day started out with quite a scare. The local police showed up around 10:30am looking for one of the leaders for our group. Lucky me...the only one awake. As my heart jumped in my throat and I began prepping myself for one of the students being in jail i asked what he needed. Oh thank GOD he was there because a student did a good deed and he wanted to get her name for the police report and to be able to formally thank her.
As my pulse slowed, but not by much, I was able to more thoroughly comprehend what he was saying. One of the girls found a constable's badge from Australia. She returned it to the front desk at our hostel and they contacted the local authorities.
Today we had a free day so we all slept in and then 6 of us went on a hike to the reflecting pool by the glacier. It was a hefty walk, 3.5 hours round trip but the conversation was awesome, the views were spectacular, and the exercise was well needed.
The reflecting pool, Peter's Pond, is the calmest water I have seen. It is a perfect mirror for the beautiful mountains behind it. New Zealand has pretty much no wildlife aside from birds so it was silent aside from birds and waterfalls. Simply breathtaking.
After the hike we went to a local pub for some potato wedges that were so good and we stayed for trivia night. We didn't win but had a great time and even ran into our glacier guide, Alex. The ladies on the trip were thrilled. We hung out there for a while and I did my best to monitor heavy drinking as we leave at 8 for our drive to Queenstown in the morning.
