Today was relaxing. A little shopping with Sarah, Sean, and Kyle and then a fun evening in the hostel. After laundry I hung out in the sauna with Sean and Kyle and thought very hard about swimming...water was too cold!
We had dinner in the hostel tonight. Bigger hostels have evening meal options for a very low price so Mark, Sean and I had some weird German pasta dish. Not my favorite food in the world but half a bowl filled me up and it came with a drink for $6. You cannot beat that ANYWHERE for a filling meal with drink.
After dinner we played euchre with Will, a young man on holiday from England. We taught him how to play and then we taught him Kimp. We liked euchre better. Will has been to the US and said he was pleasantly surprised with his visit. He had a lengthy list of assumptions about the states and Americans that he was happy to realize were not true of alllllll Americans. Will said in Europe Americans are seen as ignorant and ethnocentric. Upon visiting for over a month he realized that is a gross over-generalization. I was glad to hear that, and he said he really loved visiting, it was much better than he anticipated.
He had to meet a friend down town at 10pm so our game was cut short. Then we chatted with a nice guy on working holiday from Ireland. He works for a few weeks then travels on that money then repeat. He has a two year visa so he is trying to see as much as possible. He went to bed so Sean, Mark and I started playing Phase 10. We were at the very end when David came up to us.
David is from South Africa but now lives in Adelaide, South Australia. He is in Sydney for the weekend. He has traveled to every continent except South America (next year's travel plans) and Antarctica...but he plans to go there eventually and has begun researching how/when to do so.
He was really fun to talk to, he is a dance instructor in Adelaide, mostly ballroom and Latin, but is ok with working any job that funds his travel bug! In North America he liked Toronto best. Europe he said was Italy hands down, Africa is South Africa but he did admit he is slightly biased, and down under he loved New Zealand. He didn't have a favorite from Asia so far.
David was friendly and outgoing, we had a wonderful card game teaching him Phase 10. We exchanged differences and similarities between US, AUS, and South Africa. I love the fun interactions hostel living provides!
Tomorrow we leave Sydney for Cairns. The weather will be warm and we have a cultural performance and dinner to attend tomorrow evening, Tjapakai. Should be interesting. . .
